This is such a question why I want to get the book.

Maybe he was isolated too much, enough to make him really crazy. Maybe he did learn some Russian except noone bothered to teach him saying "I am Hungarian".
Besides for 40 years it was mandatory in schools to learn Russian on the Hungary. Noone learnt here, why would he learn there.
