YAY! BECKY THREAD!
This is a great question for Cato.
But the answer is no.

Your guess is as good as mine.
We need to make an actual evaluation for the risks but there is too many hidden variables in the thing, like how to pick worthwhile asteroids, or how long some projects are going to take.
It's a heavy investment high risk endeavour which isn't entirely clear if even worth it in the long run because of possible operational costs and whatnot. I guess one thing that could happen is space rockets stop being so shit but that's sci-fi territory.

I may sound excited or knowledgeable about the thing, but I am in fact neither.

Waiting for Cato to respond to my previous post (in the previous thread) btw

>asteroids are very far away
They really aren't. The main belt, even though it is between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter, is actually relatively easy to get to, and once orbital trains are set up will require an extremely small amount of fuel to access regularly. That is even considering that we want to go with the main belt and not one of the numerous near-earth asteroids

>If we learn to recycle
If we learn perfect recycling that will help, but we are constantly building taller and making more "stuff" so just recycling isn't going to be enough to satisfy those needs

>if we don't have enough
I mean, we really don't have enough. Rare earth elements are called rare earth elements for a reason. You also have to consider what kind of advances we could make if some of these materials became easily accessible. How accessible would electronics be if gold was the price of iron?

>all the moneybags
Investment in space science and the potential for space infrastructure has been increasing significantly over the past decade. Just look at companies like SpaceX

>add a decde to any project
Well yeah, I said that

>You can't even rotate people from mars
Why not?

>They really aren't
They are. It would take several months at least to get to them. Those are some really nasty supply chains.
>That is even considering that we want to go with the main belt and not one of the numerous near-earth asteroids
Yea, I didn't consider that. The idea seems much less reliable than just getting to the main mass of them.
I suppose those would be first targets for the mining but even then people are sceptical.
>If we learn perfect recycling that will help, but we are constantly building taller and making more "stuff" so just recycling isn't going to be enough to satisfy those needs
I guess I am an ascetic type but I really, really don't think endless scaling up and relying on it is going to work in the long run. First, the side effects such as environmental damage would be immense (in proportion to scaling up). Second, there is no such thing as endless scaling. I don't want to be the cancer to ruin myself lol, but you are free to disagree.
>I mean, we really don't have enough.
As far as I am aware, there is a huge amount of Earth crust not explored yet. Seabed is poorly explored as well. Maybe something really expensive like sifting through gorillion tons of ocean water for minerals is cheaper still lol. Do we really not have enough?
>You also have to consider what kind of advances we could make if some of these materials became easily accessible. How accessible would electronics be if gold was the price of iron?
Also such huge changes in economy would cause great social shifts lol. Doesn't matter for good or bad, it still could have massive negative consequences.
And I think humanity is more energy capped than anything. With lots of energy we could run even more expensive projects for recycling and mining. Probably even space travelling (transporting) would benefit from this because we could make hydrogen fuel basically forever.
>Investment in space science and the potential for space infrastructure has been increasing significantly over the past decade. Just look at companies like SpaceX
I dunno what exactly you mean but doing stuff like launching communication satellites at least pays off, and it pays off relatively quickly. I am not entirely sure economy is in such a good shape it could make some heavy investments without any return for decades (or never if we fail). Call me a coward but I don't think it's really me being a coward here. After all, I don't own huge industries or monies, it's all those people who matter who are not going to do this.
>Why not?
I am pretty sure the several months they would spend going back and forth are about safe threshold for human body being in space if not above it. And those people need to actually do meaningful stuff on Mars or whenever. I feel like first people going there would really be some one-way trips with highly possible deaths while trying to set up.

童 seems to be a part of 瞳 but I don't know how kanji combining works at all. Does pupil being a part of an eye i.e. a "child" of an eye seem like a plausible explanation? Honestly, I doubt it so please confirm or deny this.

Sometimes I wonder how much of it is actually otaku's nostalgia about their school days with schoolgirls in such swimsuits and not just a tribute to the media where you have to draw "otaku stuff" just because.
Because, well, this swimsuit doesn't look good on the girl. Or maybe on any girl. Fight me. xD

Well, in the case of Marine its because she's officially 17, but she's very clearly much older, so there's a lot of art of her in clothes for really young kids to play on the "old woman trying to play a younger girl" thing.

OK, I thought the consequences are more severe TBH. It still looks really bad. Radiation aside, zero-gravity atrophy is more about doing doing business rather than caring about health.
Also apparently low orbit craft doesn't receive all possible sources of radiation.

Anyway I raised much more points than this.

there are 6 types of kanji
指事 which is a kanji which is made up of the images/visual of it not the pronouncation of the kanji
象形 which are when the kanji is a direct image of what its meant to be, hard to spot in modern chinese/japanese but it relates to the old writing styles 人 is an example
會意 is what 瞳 is, a combining of the meaning of two kanji to make a new one like 森, made up of 3木

pupil was considered a smaller part belonging to the eye, hence the kanji, i dont see how its strange, isnt it similar with english pupil which also means student/child?

>There is a huge amount of the Earth that isn't explored yet, including the seafloor
That.. isn't how things work. The seafloor is mostly comprised of relatively young MORB basalt that really doesn't vary that much in composition. The reason why ore bodies exist is through the process of plate tectonics that created the continental plates, inherent heterogeneity created relatively small areas that concentrated certain materials. Doesn't really happen much with MORB basalts.

>it could have massive negative consequences.
The consequences could also be incredibly good. The global market is not based on the gold standard anymore and fluctuating commodity prices is the nature of the markets. Especially if we know it is going to happen, there is plenty of time for the rich investors to deal with their money

>Heavy investments without returns for decades.

It's not that strange but I wouldn't be surprised if the explanation was different.
Also I am not an etymology pro, but apparently pupil as in a supervised student and as in a hole in the eye both come from Latin and the pupil there is not a part of an eye but rather a reflection in the eye. Pupus. Pupa. Pupilla. The reflection is the doll, pupilla.

>The reason why ore bodies exist is through the process of plate tectonics that created the continental plates
Tectonic processes happen underwater also but I am not really a geologist.
After all, that point might be invalid merely because it could be even more expensive than near Earth asteroid mining.
>Especially if we know it is going to happen, there is plenty of time for the rich investors to deal with their money
I am not sure if this is how it works at all. Say we know the prices for something drop. What happens next, huh? I don't think anybody can predict this. I mean, by introducing new possibilities we launch a cascade of chaotic events.
>You should look up the starship.
I don't think the mere possibility of launching an expedition to Mars means anything. The important part of this upstart is to build some infrastructure in space, which was not attempted before. I'm not saying it's impossible but the really impossible thing is to do it right on the first try, and how many attempts do we have before it turns into another massive financial black hole?
>They are already spending millions in development and just had a static fire test of one of the prototypes.
Whatever. I am not telling adult people how to spend their money lol. It would be cool if anything at all came out of this. They say it's the journey that's important, not the destination. xD
I do not think my destination lies in space. I mean, c'mon, without FTL travel the whole thing is just sad.

>There, I replied to a few more

>Gambling for cash is nominally illegal in Japan, but the widespread popularity of low-stakes pachinko gambling in Japanese society has enabled a specific legal loophole allowing it to exist. Under the law, pachinko balls won from games cannot be exchanged directly for money in the parlor, nor can they be removed from the premises or exchanged with other parlors; however, they can be legally traded to the parlor for so-called "special prize" tokens (特殊景品 tokushu keihin), which are then legally "sold" for cash to a separate vendor located off-premises. These vendors (ostensibly independent from—but often owned by—the parlor owner) then sell the tokens back to the parlor at the same price paid for them (plus a small commission), thus turning a cash profit without technically violating the law.
I love how you can pull this up directly from Wikipedia but apparently the gambler fighters do not do anything about it. Or do they? (wives beating up their husbands for losing all the paycheck in pachinko parlors don't count)
>By 1994, the pachinko market in Japan was valued at ¥30 trillion (nearly $300 billion).[2] In 1999, sales and revenue from pachinko parlors contributed 5.6% of Japan's ¥500 trillion GDP and over 330,000 people were employed by pachinko parlors, 0.52% of all those employed in Japan.[3] As of 2015, Japan's pachinko market generates more gambling revenue than that of Las Vegas, Macau and Singapore combined.[4] The grey market nature and tremendous profit involved in pachinko gambling historically resulted in considerable infiltration by Yakuza, who used it as a vehicle for money laundering and racketeering, but since the 1990s this has been less of an issue due to police crackdowns.[5]
Big in Japan lol.

Also, wth
>Utawarerumono (Japanese: うたわれるもの) is a Japanese adult tactical role-playing visual novel
No need for eroge and I am not a big fan of tactics. I dunno, all such games require you tight control on the situation, and most of success comes from you to be able to successfully blow up the whole enemy party before they can do anything to you because this is a long, long endurance battle where you pay for your slips with cascading consequences. Well, unless that game has much more lenient balance in which case it's too simple.

Honestly I'm just near the end of my Darkest Dungeon run and some of the design decisions here I just don't like. Namely, the really nasty difficulty spike from veteran to champion dungeons. I lost parties to this.

They actually changed Totori to 14 too, but thats not as big of a difference. They also thought it would be oh so hilarious to change a character's name to Esty Dee. I'm glad the series is out of their hands, but their mark is forever left on it, especially when KT is too lazy to retranslate any of the games NISA did for future releases.

It's tactical, but not tactical in the sense that Civilization and Age of Empire are tactical. You just have units deployed and then it's up to you to utilize their abilities to win the battle.

I agree, thats why I said "closest".
I think what you're seeing is that she's supposed to have a bit more of a "city girl" look in the right image. Because in the first game she lives in a small backwater island town, but in the second game she's moving to the big city.
>>27803
The closest to that is the protags in previous games returning in later games when they're older, like Ayesha in Shallie Plus or Rorona in Lulua. We might get cake Ryza in 3 though, which I'd be totally okay with.
Same reasoning as Nintendo changing a character from 13 to 15 in Xenoblade X, I assume.
I dunno, NISA might be getting better. I was very surprised when they redid Ys VIII's translation and released it as a free update. Although on the other hand, they had to fuck it up bad enough for it to need a retranslation in the first place. Either way, they're not my problem anymore at least.

Also even when Rorona got a kid they were just adopted despite the fact she's like the only protagonist besides Escha who regularly gets paired with one of the guys from her games.

Except that we don't lol.
Though I suppose the infrastucture of separate rockets/spaceships going from the surface and to the other planets and moons would change things but hey, that is exactly what is expensive about this, the heavy investment.
BTW isn't lead shielding better? I mean, it's certainly heavier but if we deliver the lead and stuff from space, we would probably care less.
>That was in response to you saying that nobody was investing significantly in anything other than platforms to launch satellites, which they actually are.
Nah, people have been talking about expedition to Mars forever at this point and I am aware of recent vehicles that were launched and operated over there. We could actually even launch the expedition for, I dunno, people to dig into the surface of Mars and build a permanent bunker there lol. Then establish the research station and then who knows what else. Mars doesn't seem to be particularly needed.

I mean, using water for shielding is an old concept now. Even the vast majority of hard scifi set in the near-future uses the water storage areas as places to shelter in the event of a burst of radiation.

So, to sum it up, asteroid mining might be worth it in the decades-long run but one thing in particular that I kinda mentioned but didn't put forward is this:

Humanity doesn't really plan decades ahead. It's difficult, the world is chaotic, just like the weather. Of course, some events in the world may be the incentives, not the hindrances on the way to this but as it stands right now, humanity doesn't need that strictly. Although it might be interesting for spacefaring nations without much in the way of mineral resources, because that would reduce their dependence on importing the stuff but my analysis stops there I guess. xD
TBH I think various "shoot down the threatening asteroid" programs exist mostly for the reason to incentivize the development of high-precision high-speed high-everything anti-ICBM systems, because a nation with both such a system and nuclear ICBMs can bully everybody without fearing for themselves. After all, big asteroids don't fall too often. Don't rate my levels of paranoia.

That is kind-of a silly argument, though. All the things that happen in the decade or two that leads to asteroid mining are not done specifically to mine asteroids, but a series of advancements that would happen anyway.
You should read the book Delta-V. Or listen to the audiobook. The audiobook is good

Didn't you tell that essentially nothing leads to it though?
I mean, c'mon, a fatter rocket won't bring you any closer to it. Lunar base will, but is there any other reason to do it other than orbital manufacturing, which isn't really that interesting unless we deliver stuff from space rocks because that's much easier than from Earth?
There should be done some immense work specifically for this, not for anything else, and people expecting returns on their investment i.e not business angels will look forward to that. Well, those are my thoughts anyway.

My good sir, I am planning here. Or more correctly, trying to "come up with" a business plan which can actually compete with the developed Earth-surface industries lol.
If we need to deliver tons and tons of cargo from Earth to Moon just for all of it to work, it clearly can work only for small scale niche things.
If we can deliver stuff from asteroids to fuel our off-world economy, that's a different story. But you say "advances will just happen", like what? Mining facilities, a network of spaceships, maintenance network and all other stuff won't appear by themselves.
Basically, there is a "bootstrapping cost", and it seems to be rather high.

You are basically ignoring what I am saying. You keep saying tons and tons of stuff that has to be moved off the Earth, but most of that "tons and tons" of stuff can be fabricated on the moon. In what possible way would I say that anything would just appear by itself?
You start with lunar industry; silica, rare metals, and helium-3 if we actually find a use for it. "mining facilities" don't just spring out of nowhere, but don't all have to be hauled up from the Earth. You need the bare-minimum equipment to to start processing material and scale up from there. Most of your heavy building material, i.e. iron/carbon/etc., will be sourced locally. Once mining infrastructure is running, sending the material off the moon and back to Earth is inexpensive, especially if you use locally-sourced hydrolox fuel (hydrogen and water). From there, you scale to orbital infrastructure; using the cheaper material that you would be mining on the moon, like all the extra silica, to produce things that would benefit greatly from a microgravity environment, like fiberoptics. From there, you start to look at asteroids. You have the material capability to relatively easily produce spacecraft without worrying about mass requirements. You can either capture asteroids that cross the earth's orbit or start orbital trains to asteroids with compositions you know that you want to exploit. At this point, the orbital economy is relatively strong and you don't even have to worry about sending all the material back to the surface.

Each one of these steps has the potential for significant profit, especially if you are the person gaining early control of a completely new market.

And even if you are worried about radiation, there is no reason we can't fit a significant number of people underground on the moon. Large lava tubes exist, so half the work is already done.

>You need the bare-minimum equipment to to start processing material and scale up from there.
Exactly.
I see this "bare minimum" pretty much unprecedented work by itself. Like, for Pete's sake, you would have to build a whole spaceship over there to start with at least, and where will you get materials from? Where will you get materials for the initial manufacturing place? All shipped from Earth. Well, maybe something can be mined on Moon but probably not all and it with "bare minimum" equipment it takes time either way. This time means other stuff delivered from Earth probably, and other operational costs.
And guess what, after you build that spaceship, you will probably need to build a fair bit more to crank up that development speed.
I just see this as extremely slow and yea, every new step is also a potential point of failure lol. That is what you call "risks".

So, the bottom line: years/decades of work without any return. At which point will we able to produce our first spaceship? At which point the amount of spaceships we have would be enough to self-suffice us? I suppose those questions have answers but still are likely to be predicted incorrectly.

>Each one of these steps has the potential for significant profit
I don't see much profit unless tens or hundreds of spaceships deliver ores and produced goods where needed. Maybe I am too greedy lol but we're trying to make a difference in the market or are we not? Anyway, that greedy talk aside, the point at which we cover the cost of our, say, lunar base by shooting supply crates with iron (lol) at Earth comes when? How much do we need to shoot? How much do we need to build on Moon to be able to shoot that much? Because until that happens, we would be running a deficit there.
>You have the material capability to relatively easily produce spacecraft without worrying about mass requirements.
I guess you're the advisor but that is not obvious to me TBH. The question of how many tons of various stuff that we cannot procure on Moon we should bring from Earth is still open. That's why I think asteroids are pretty much essential here, potentially replacing all the loops we have with Earth, because yaddayadda, we do not want to launch stuff from Earth if we want to make profit, pretty much ever. That's why I don't see this working without asteroids.

Dude, just pull stuff out of the Earth and package it LMAO. Literally free money. xD
Joking aside, stuff is less profitable mostly because of taxing I think, and worry yourself not, taxers will come to space too. Also it's not that much of a joke.

All that aside, you are going to fight the established infrastructure with your operational costs of launching billions of dorrars into space and whatever other mishaps you gonna have.

Ah, yeah, that makes sense. I guess you could say maybe the plot is a bit closer to a henshin hero plot instead, but those lines have become very blurred since the advent of Precure anyways. What even constitutes something as a deconstruction? It just feels like so many people watch anime and have a mindset along the lines of "if this doesn't have some kind of deep meaning then how can I justify watching cartoons!?!?!?" And if something is popular, these sheeple have to like it, and if they have to like a cartoon they have to come up with some kind of pretentious and deep justification for why they like it. Whereas I just watch anime to have fun and don't care about thinking too hard about it.
>So you're a cyberbully now.
I'm sure I am according to him at least.

>What even constitutes something as a deconstruction?
Well, I think this is an interesting paragraph:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deconstruction#Literary_criticism
<Deconstruction denotes the pursuing of the meaning of a text to the point of exposing the supposed contradictions and internal oppositions upon which it is founded—supposedly showing that those foundations are irreducibly complex, unstable, or impossible. It is an approach that may be deployed in philosophy, in literary analysis, and even in the analysis of scientific writings.[39] Deconstruction generally tries to demonstrate that any text is not a discrete whole but contains several irreconcilable and contradictory meanings; that any text therefore has more than one interpretation; that the text itself links these interpretations inextricably; that the incompatibility of these interpretations is irreducible; and thus that an interpretative reading cannot go beyond a certain point.
I think that for example, one way to deconstruct one of the aspects of a show such as Precure would be to turn the girls into cops, and the show into police drama, because that's what Cures do and that's what happens in the show for the most part, police brutality included. Precure is usually really clear-cut on what is right and what is wrong but some parts of the indoctrination machine are actually broken. Well, it's for 5 y.o. girls so whatever, I guess.
>I'm sure I am according to him at least.
I mean that if you deliberately seek to mess with somebody, you are objectively a bully lol. I suppose banter is also a word but I think most of the time it's not really banter.

Yeah, that is an interesting paragraph. I don't see how Madoka in any way "exposes the supposed contradictions and internal oppositions upon which it(Magical Girl shows in this case) are founded".
Precure often goes on about peace and what not, but because the conflict is black and white, the Cures more often than not come out punching right away. Although I would see the cop thing as more of a parody than a deconstruction, although I suppose there is some overlap.
Normally I do try to strike up a conversation with him, I just might be very hyperbolic or intentionally rude at times in order to get a rise out of him.

>I don't see how Madoka in any way "exposes the supposed contradictions and internal oppositions upon which it(Magical Girl shows in this case) are founded".
I guess one thing that could be said is for example a trope of a magical familiar, Kyuubei in our case, was played in a pretty regular manner but with one twist - QB is actually a malevolent soul eater or something and not a cute toy. The contradiction therefore is that magical familiars can have ulterior motives, I guess. I dunno if that qualifies honestly, but if it does this is one trope deconstructed, not all/most of them.
>Precure often goes on about peace and what not
One thing about cures is that they actually love peace and would love to just come back to their daily life but they have to fight because, well, it's basically like a job. Maybe the contradiction is "to live at peace you have to murder every bad person" lol. If you think about it like that, Precure is probably a bad thing to show to kids.
>I just might be very hyperbolic or intentionally rude at times in order to get a rise out of him.

As I said, that's just one way to spin it. Japan is a pretty disturbing country if you look at it as a nice rich developed country with one of the highest suicide rates in the world for example (something is not right here, and explanation is not pleasant I suppose), but I guess nobody is ideal.

You know we already have the heavy-lift capability to move the processing equipment we'd need, right?

>are still likely to be predicted incorrectly
Then what is the point of this discussion in the first place?

>tens or hundreds of spaceships
It sounds like you are greatly overestimating what a "spaceship" that delivers material between the moon and the Earth entails. We already have the technology and the vehicles themselves are both relatively inexpensive and don't have to be human-rated.

>it is not obvious
What is the point of me continuously repeating myeslf? Complex electronics are going to be the primary material that is going to need to be produced on the Earth. Let's consider a bucket-excavator. The complex electronics themselves (those requiring special fcilities to produce, so not including simple wiring, etc) comprise an extremely small percent of it's total mass. Just about everything else can be manufactured with material obtained on the moon.

I also don't really understand your fixation on immediate profit. The mining industry is another good example here. The initial investment to start a mine, especially a hard-rock mine, can take many years to return the initial investment, even if every year is profitable. These are not investments that are made to see profit tomorrow, but investments that you know you will not see your money back for another 5-10 years, but will be producing a net profit for 3 to 4 decades. That's how these industries work. This is not unheard of in any way, shape or form.

Do you know how much it costs to start a mine? You have to buy the land, work within environmental regulations, pay numerous contractors to do surveys so that you know which regulations you need to follow, pay the government to send inspectors to regularly check that you are actually following the regulations, and any other of those "taxes" that you mention. The primary taxes for space industry will be import/export.

I also don't hate you, this is a topic I enjoy discussing. I actually don't hate weeb either.

>You know we already have the heavy-lift capability to move the processing equipment we'd need, right?
I dunno, even if we didn't, with enough modularizing we could just deliver the stuff in multiple goes so it's not really a concern?? questionmark
>Then what is the point of this discussion in the first place?
Imagine rooting for moon mining and not even having a plan.
>It sounds like you are greatly overestimating what a "spaceship" that delivers material between the moon and the Earth entails.
There I was thinking about spaceships to mine asteroids.
>Just about everything else can be manufactured with material obtained on the moon.
…and the total weight of infrastructure that actually HAS to delivered from Earth for us to be able to start is what? You're killing me here.
I suppose we could start with one small excavator and wait for 50 years until it digs up enough or something lol.
>I also don't really understand your fixation on immediate profit.
Competition with present industries. Also until the offworld industry is in full swing I imagine operational costs being higher than ones of the Earth industries.
>you will not see your money back for another 5-10 years
Compared to moon mining, it looks like 2-3 times faster at least lol.
>Do you know how much it costs to start a mine?
Still probably cheaper. Call me when all mines are tapped already.
>The primary taxes for space industry will be import/export.
BRB need to lobby my new law with my buddies @White House because exploiting Moon ruins feng shui of my beautiful and pristine Selene (I wouldn't bet on it happening but it actually might). xD
I guess one thing that makes it really viable is exactly that - the new frontier laws or something. But I don't see it happening without heavy billionaire/governmental aid and I don't like it as well, but that's irrelevant to the talk for the most part.
BTW I'm curious, do space launches get taxed? I mean, some hydrogen rocket probably doesn't have to be but there are various and pretty nasty rocket fuel types there. I imagine most of the mass of the spent rocket fuel stays in the atmosphere forever.
