The basis of their reasoning is that Christianity is already banished from the decision making process of the state (they can participate as lobbyists ofc) basically in all Christian countries. Secular state means this, the division of government and religion. Religion is a private matter not a public.
However in the countries of Islam rarely this is the case (if at all) and the immigrants bring this mentality with them. I haven't read Koran, but I would bet 10 HUF that according to Islam the state and Islam is inseparable. Luttwak in his book about coups he mentions that in Muslim countries no coupists dare to mess with the church, everyone has to declare their fidelity to Islam.
So the growing numbers of Muslims in Europe will be a problem, and now Macron and co. try to address this by educating/raising them that no church has a place in the politics of the state. It seems to me they try to create their "liberal/moderate Islam" they already preach about a few years now despite it does not exist. Islam is one, although there are groups who try to gain power through it (most notably ISIS, but as far as I know Erdogan also plays that game, just in a softer form). The weak secular Christians can't stop the influence of the Islam, every new child born, every new immigrant arriving it gets stronger and gains more playground. Those who whisper in the ears of the imams can control what the masses think, and as long as not the French government is the whisperer those masses are potential source of terrorism (although I'm not sure this is the right term to use) but more importantly they can exploit them less as voter base.
So all in all I don't think it is just a reaction to make France more safe from Islam inspired attacks, but to secure the new voters, so just daily politics as always.
Also one of the article mentions that the larger part of young Muslims does not care about the role of Islam in politics, but growing number of youth turns to radical ideas and fundamentalism.
