>Religion is a public matter primarily because its raison d'etre is influencing, guiding, "helping", "saving" the public.
Or with other words: the business of religion is morality, which is a public matter.
Sexuality is very much belongs to morality. A large part of who a person is, how they act and behave is influenced by, drive by sexual urges (and the motivating factors behind that). People are motivated to do thins, to be interested in things because they want to find one or more partners to mate with. We can leave our acts behind closed doors, but we can't leave behind a chunk of our personality.
I'm gonna try to paint a picture about how great part sexuality is of who we are and how it influences us via an example. Music and songs. For most people music and songs are undividedly intertwines with sexuality. For them it is part of the mating ritual. They go to clubs to dance to music and find partners. And they have sex while listening to music. And this will influence their preference in music. They don't listen to music just for the music at all. And they'll be horrified if they would hear - let's say - "Rust in Peace... Polaris" by Megadeth, which is about a weapon system and nuclear holocaust. They can't imagine such songs exist. For them songs are about love, tunes are just imitation of the rhythm of sex. They go to classical music concerts because that means high status sex.
Besides homosexuals demand additional rights based on their sexual preference. That is a public matter.
