Following Trump's distortions of truth (not Truth as his platform) I see Americans falling for the "NATO is a separate organization, has nothing to do with the US" and similar narratives.
Trump started with stuff like, taking the role of "intermediary" and "negotiator" between NATO and Russia, or making a deal with NATO, or NATO not caring about Greenland, or NATO not helping with Iran, etc.
So in case a burger will read this, I want to be clear:

NATO is a support structure of the US that helps projecting power over the globe.
NATO is formed by US's allies, that were indebted to the US to their chin and above, where the US had basing rights for her troops, air force, navy; and from former enemy countries what the US occupied, and made indebted to their chin.
Other countries were added where the US feared the communists will take over, and intervened to prevent that, which resulted in further acquisition of basing rights.
NATO is a way to keep US allies from getting armed against each other, keep them fighting each other. The US being the strongest NATO member keeps the rest weak, prevents any of them gaining primacy over the others, prevents them - individually and collectively - from rising to be a rival for the US.
Each NATO member each is a springboard for the US to reach places around the globe.
Each NATO member helps the US in other ways to contain states that the US perceives as "enemy". The US can mobilize them for sanctions, use their votes in the UN to move forward her agenda, or hamper the agenda of "enemy" states.

This is just a nicer way of saying, that NATO is one string that the US animates her clients with, one of the tools the US aiming for global hegemony (or keep it when hegemon).

Think about this: how many allied countries to the US has basing rights in the US and bases combat troops there?
