There is a theory that the name Frank comes from the Francisca that they were known to use, like the theory that Saxons are named after the Sax(although the Sax is also a fairly common weapon amongst most North Germanic tribes) or that the Langobards(who became the Lombards) were named after a type of axe.

Ewart Oakeshott says the Franks were the most barbarous tribe but that they absorbed the tactics and technology of those they conquered, For example, they were known to have fought in the older Germanic method of unarmoured tribesmen fighting on foot but they adopted Heavy cavalry from the Lombards who were famous for it.
