It's also likely that a lot of "gifted kids" just had accelerated neurological development compared to their peers. You're obviously going to be smarter if your brain is like 4-5 years ahead, but then it evens out over time and they lose that advantage. Personally I still feel smart in relative terms it's just that I've pretty much given up on life due to all my issues and I rarely think at all anymore
