It's more like, we need more than the park/other rats to not be in prison, those are our physical/social needs. We have immaterial needs that if neglected can make us be as likely to dive into drugs as a rat in a cage even if you have a family life and a park.

We can also be broken in ways a rat can't, such as the shadow becoming a demon thing.
