Sleep deprivation is means to the end of reaching an altered mind state, in which the persona/ego is already sort of conscious in the subconscious.
It feels like you are watching yourself, depersonalization episode they call it.
If you prep before sleeping, and reach that state, you get lucid dreams almost every time.
There are many ways to reach that state, I used to prefer "sensorial overload".
Extremely heavy music (pyramids + nadja being my favorite) combined with a saturation of visual stimuli (some videoclips work, but I used to just browse art/photography galleries like pinterest/pixdaus/etc...
It's a strange state of overload + boredom but entertained. You leave the external world and shelter in the inner world, its by itself a really good state to do creative stuff. Sleep deprivation facilitates it, but its not necessary.
After a while I can just will myself into that state at will.
