Yuuka explained it. These flowers are parasitic but in the same way there are micro organisms, bacteria etc in the body. They serve a purpose on the energy body, they keep the energy channels (meridians) open and can prevent illnesses by absorbing negative qi. Plants are earth in element so they can consume it. But it's rarely seen anymore because humans have too much dirty qi and karma so the plants just die. If they appear somewhere it's because the environment was "just dirty enough" for their cleansing effect to be possible. Pulling the flower out removed the blockage which had been entangled in its roots.

If they appear it's not a problem, if you feel uncomfortable you can try to pull them out and your meridian may unblock.
