Different people start from different places, so they need to focus on learning different things. Distinguishing my own thoughts from external messages was for me something like "flipping a switch" mentally. I suddenly realized "I didn't think that, this message is external" and disassociated it from the concept of what is my own mind. At that moment it stopped being heard in my own narrative voice.

After that I could do it, even if the external communicators tried to put it in a voice that sounded like myself in an attempt at tricking me, I would still know it wasn't me because they got the tone slightly off.

Keeping silent was not the main issue for me, so it is indeed personal which part you need to learn. That said, I already practice this as part of daily meditation since almost 20 years, so my mind is probably pretty silent already.

If you instead of telepathy attempt channelling, which is slightly different, it's more a matter of being submissive and practicing non-interference to speak or type the messages exactly. This skill is useful with telepathy also, for some situations it may work better to link the other part directly to the lips and speak it out loud. It's also something I found to work really well with tricksters or meddlers who try to insert messages in my mind. If I just channel them instead, it's definitely not me saying it. This will make them pretty upset though, it's one of things you're not expected to do.

The combination of keeping your own thoughts silent and then channelling per default, makes you pretty much immune to external meddling, as anything appearing in the mind is external at that point.
