All of this is a clear sign of just how provoking your existence is to them, which tells of your increase in power. Unfortunately all you can do is to defeat them because these are "trials" bound to karma and some of these people are deluded and should also be saved by you in some way.
As for why you would break a leg, it's pretty extreme so I all I can think of here is that it was your death trial and your karma was pretty bad to make this happen.
