Well, links2 will block most of the shit, since it has no support for JS and CSS. If you need to block specific images linked on the HTML, it has a function to do it (just go on the image and then on menu you can press Link > Block image). You can also get some uBlock list and put it on your host file, this should be a better solution.
Or, you can do what I do: use links2 without images and just enable it only when needed (press the asterisk symbol, "SHIFT + 8").
And, yeah, Xmonad is really good, give it a try. I used it for about a year, before switch to ion3 (because it has tabs, good for links2 browsing and organization).
