What was the purpose of Hooktube? What about it was better than using mpv + youtube-dl, and why did people use it?

Hooktube was good because you didn't have to directly connect to youtube/google, it acted as a proxy. At least that's why I used it.

You're a retard. Hooktube was just a wrapper around youtube-dl. The only thing it did was send you a link to googlevideo servers and tell your browser to play that.

I thought that was only after it got shut down by the goog? I remember you could use the embed link and play a webm from hooktube without connecting to youtube or googlevideo.

Hooktube always served from jewglevideo. In the beginning before it got pozzed it used a <video> tag, but after Jewgle shut it down it used <iframe> embeds which include more javashit and tracking from jewgle.
