Probably coddling. Not experiencing pressures and difficulties in life makes it so a person has zero need to evolve/mature, so they don't.
Additionally, people who were molested as kids\teens tend to stay at the mental age they were when they were abused.
(Not saying either of these are what happened to Ken, just offering explanations)
