That's probably a part of the reason but I think another big reason is that with all these girls being shoved into one server together they are essentially pitted against each other in constant competition, which I think really prevents them from being able to show their personality and makes the whole thing about just looks. Ciara would have never made it in discord era because she is simply too "homely" looking.
