I don't think there's anything artsy in putting things over your face, but it is indeed an attempt at being cute. that cuteness, though, derives precisely by an expression of shyness and insecurity which one is supposed to find cute and endearing. since this cute, endearing shyness is expressed by means of a fashionable gesture repeated and imitated by countless girls on the internet, it's a replica, a copy, a reproduction, which is the opposite of a sponeaneous, strictly personal gesture. as such, it can only be contrived, regardless of whether it's performed for a selfie or a candid. now, if you want we can keep nitpicking until the end of the world, but if you indulge in pedantry a little longer I might begin to think that you're autistic as well (and if you are, well, there you go).
