The simple act of converting a standard GIF to an animated PNG almost always results in a smaller file size. Indeed, the file size savings are sometimes shockingly significant.

Here is an example of potential file size savings comparing an animated GIF with its identical animated PNG counterpart. The APNG is nearly a third of the file size!

Over several years and hundreds of converted GIFs, I have personally only come across exceptions a couple of times now. The only times in which conversion to APNG has resulted in a larger file I am at a loss for replicating how the original GIF was optimized so well in the first place. I believe this is due to the nature of the conversion tool failing to replicate the original optimization technique.
