You cant ask straight up, that would be suspicious. On the other hand even if you talk about topics about which you are well informed to gain trust you are still risking you will get something wrong. Asking something very specific would probably be the best option. But still the question shouldn't come out of the blue. You probably shouldn't listen to me tho, I have no experience in social engineering.
