Don't call the police, and only when the suspect has already left the scene. When you call the police you put yourself as the victim at being a suspect also. You also won't get your stuff back from the assailant because the police aren't there to do that for you. They're there to collect evidence for crimes and revenue, not actually assist the citizens in recovering stolen goods.
