Not an expert by any means but x264 was the standard compression encoding method for MPEG-4 since 2004 and x265 is the successor which was adopted back in 2013 for an even higher video quality compression just a few years ago. The problem is, if you have older hardware and older software they are only compatible with x264 encoded video formats. So I would imagine there is something more modern that will allow users to play x265 encoded videos on their TV sets.
