In Gnosticism, the creation process is viewed as a catastrophic blunder. Unlike orthodox Abrahamic traditions where a supreme God flawlessly creates the universe, Gnostic cosmology asserts that the material world is a botched, distorted copy of the divine realm. This cosmic failure is blamed entirely on the Demiurge (often named Yaldabaoth) and his subordinate cosmic administrators, the Archons.

Seeing their failure, the divine realm intervened through Sophia. She tricked the Demiurge into breathing his own inherited divine power into Adam. The moment he did, Adam came to life—but he instantly outshone his creators. The Archons realized that the creature they intended to dominate possessed a divine spark far superior to their own power. Envious and terrified of Adam's potential, they frantically locked him in the Garden of Eden and later trapped the divine spark within physical bodies of flesh, mud, and heavy emotional desires (grief, lust, and fear) to keep humanity spiritually asleep.
