Long term damage to the central nervous system has been well-documented among long-term inhalant users of toluene.[25] The long-term effects of chronic toluene exposure include changes in sleeping patterns, liver failure, kidney failure, heart failure, persistent neurological damage, and death[26]. Toluene is known to cause congenital disabilities and the birth rate of children when used by pregnant women [27]. It is a possible carcinogen, and its nature as a carcinogen is unknown is due to insufficient data from the EPA [28]. Caution should be used if choosing to inhale this chemical in recreational amounts (i.e. over a single experience and over long periods of time). Use of this inhalant can cause sudden death upon inhalation and is not advisable from a harm reduction perspective.
