While the average human have a middle age crisis because of lack of a deep meaning of their life and because they can't handle deep thinking for long, it is not the case for Zen monks that can easily go beyond shallow mundane things!
As a branch of Buddhism (>>624), Zen concentrate in meditation. Zen goes beyond ordinary reasoning, fundamental logic and philosophy... Reaching some sort of "emptiness" of though.
We desire to reach the highest consciousness, when enlightenment happen and maximum fluidity of thought happen.
