You got some good old boys making home-made fireworks. Based on context a rural area. Thing about home-made fireworks is they usually show off and you hear a really loud BOOOOOOOM. Guarantee there will be cruisers speeding towards whoever is doing that in 99% of towns. So they are shooting off medium sized ones. Probably got their own metal tube. Scary sure but in that setting its not uncommon to hear rounds like hickock45 was your neighbor. Unsettling sure but maybe in your area they just got carried away with it.
