I don't really get it either because if you try to get autistic about it all you have is basically a sauce with meat and nothing else. Not really much of a meal unless you put it over rice or dip bread into it. For chili competitions I can sort of see the point, but some do allow whatever you want to dump into it. Some people even add corn.
