A German defensive stance did not affect allied plans at all actually. So going back to Alanbrook's war Diaries, from very early on in the war the British people had wanted to land in France, right after they had left, Churchill was constantly pestering the Imperial staff to try and get them to land in Norway and when the US got involved they wanted to land in France as well. However, Alanbrook and the Imperial staff had a long term goal that was always to secure the Mediterranean first and had frequent arguments with the Americans and Churchill over this.

As I mention here >>43403 in 1942 the Americans were already talking about landing in France and the British would end up bending them to the Mediterranean plan in early 1943 but the Mediterranean first plan was much older than that and had been the plan ever since Alanbrook became CIGS.
