And another aspect of all of this, these subs are not going to be operational until the 2040s. China could have collapsed by then, many projections are indicating that if it doesn't collapse it is at least going to hit a wall(or numerous walls) at that time or before. There are also advancements in technology that might make this all moot. Undersea drones are becoming more of a thing and they are much cheaper and may even be able to perform many of the same functions that nuclear subs could. This is a lot to spend on something that won't be operational for 20 years in a rapidly changing environment.

The German election will have a lot to say on that possibility. Of course not war but whether the EU will shift to a more independent stance and look less to the US. Due to the Sub issue it's likely France will try to push for that, they know now that they cannot rely on the good will and cooperation of the US, UK and Australia.

I don't think there will ever be a world war again however(well not for a very, very long time). At most we would get limited warfare and economic warfare. There are too many issues with major wars nowadays, there is the complexity of modern societies and economies but also the US could never actually invade China nor could China ever actually invade the US. Russia can't really do anything either, I guess the EU could probably invade Russia if it spent enough on their militaries and restructured things enough. But then Russia has Nukes.
