This phrase "the State of Israel" doesn't mean a literal country, as it didn't exist back in Herzl's time. The State of Israel is pretty much a federation of the Jewish micronations within all of our own nations. Zionism basically entails working for the advancement of the status of Jews in the world, from lowly usurers to being grossly overrepresented in occupations in the financial, medical, political and entertainment spheres. Zionism means the creation of a new Jewish world order, not just taking over Palestine. If they just wanted Palestine, then they'd get the fuck out of our governments, press, banks, etc.
To get onto the real topic, people are calling Hitler "Zionist" because he was in favour of resettling all of Germany's, then the whole of Europe's, Jews in a place where they could pursue their own livelihood without sucking us dry; if you've read the 8/pol/ translation of "200 Years Together" by Pushkin then you'll find that they are VERY against doing honest work, as they "don't see themselves in any other occupation" than usury. This was actually the plan called the "Final Solution to the Jewish Problem": just deporting them hadn't worked, as they just destroyed our brother nations instead, so instead the Final Solution entailed resettling all of Europe's Jews so that their pernicious influence on us will cease.
Now, while some may think this was too lenient, it would certainly have solved the problem of Jewish influence for a while (it will probably be a bit harder to do so in modern times). Whether we need to consider genocide is another topic best discussed elsewhere.
