GUIDs as image file names Anonymous 07/18/2018 (Wed) 04:35:05 Id: 530b0e [Preview] No. 68521
Something weird is happening on various image boards (4chan, 8chan, foreign language imageboards)
They started using Global Unique IDentifiers (GUID), 128 bit numbers as image file names.

For reference see h ttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GUID

What is causing this? Any ideas?

Maybe they're just tired of keeping the hash database of illegal pictures (cp etc.) updated and this was a maintenance friendly off-the-shelf-solution.

tracking the spread of images.
images are not typically re-named when downloaded and re-uploaded. although they could also insert some background code inside the image itself.

Not here, by the way are 4chan IDs global, or per thread?

There was a thread about this on 8pol last month, it's some initiative by some feminist to track posting behaviours of extremists. They also add a tag in exif data.

it's iPhones. iPhones used to name all uploaded images 'image.jpg' and now they use this format since they switched from an instance based webkit plugin to uploading directly from the filesystem.

I have seen this off/on for many years but never found a proper explanation for it. I would have to say the first time I noticed it was ~2008-2009 or so but never really thought anything of it.
