in a way, 3 members have a had a story through the series: Twilight, Rarity and Rainbow. All three have had to make sacrifices to reach something that has meant a step for their objective.
Not everything is fanservice nor it should be classified as such, but when they are the main characters, their story is not what has to please everyone. They establish high and lows for what comes next, not for what someone likes. A certain portion liked Twilight´s alicornhood but the rest....well. Nobody liked the idea of revisiting Manehattan for another episode of Rarity having a 2nd boutique yet, there you have Saddle Row Review. Not many liked the way Rainbow joined to the Wonderbolts but it fits her. They act like cunts at times, and so she does.

well, Twilight has ended up....teaching others. So, I guess half of your point is certainly accomplished while you would have liked to see that in season 6 or so. And yeah, the power levels back then were chaotic, the Cutie Remark hurt a lot and created useless discussions to see who was better (it didn´t only hurt Twilight´s image a bit but also the backstory of Dolores for having such magic capabilities. Thanks Celestia, the slice of life episodes turned off that flame.

Twilight wasn´t that perfect either. I see why you could have had trouble with her in season 1 in episodes like the Scare Master or Green isn´t your Color where she is shoehorned everywhere for some reason. Sure, her adorkable attitude was kind of missing during season 4 and maybe 5 but she still has kept that charm after all. But the drama, oh boy, not only the princesshood make the fans consider her as a boring princess like they projected(comparing her to a Cadence clone), but also EqG with Flash Sentry. Twifags were the Glimfags of 2014 and 2015. Until wings weren´t accepted after season 5 or so, the memes and constant shitposting was the norm. Nowadays, Twifags don´t care which way you post her but they were divided in their own thread.

well, she has hardly have any bad episodes. I cannot point in which episodes she has been annoying (or at least for me). The fun out of her comes from her overdramatic breakdowns or fiascos. It´s hard not to see that her phrases were intended for the comedy effect.
