>but they're more isolated, idiosyncratic, and had none of the social aspect. It could be described more less in lines of doing your thing quietly, while on the other side of the wall there's a big party, and years later you hear stories of how awesome the party was.
Hey, honestly may not be that far off from you. I never posted anywhere, just looked around, and in the golden era I mainly watched others look around/post. I mainly just played around a few sites, with the closest to any fandom involvement being bionicle related, but even than that was more IRL fandom than online.

Also this. Also don't know if this is correct, but I get the feel like even if there was a centralization back then, it wasn't as restricitve as it is nowadays.
At the time the free speech dynamic was much different. In the US the early trailblazers of th social platforms were quite pro free speech. Twitter once described itself as being on the free speech side of the free speech party. The perception was that anti free speech would come from busybodies on the right and the government, of which there was several incidents involving ISPs and allegations of censership of left wing speech mixed in so everyone was more weary of putting restrictiveness. So I think your right on that. Now there is a lot of corporate pressure on one end and SJWs that have tainted the old civil libertarian left that established the atmosphere of the net.

>Eh, distro choice doesn't get to dictate that.
True, but I was just joking on the stereotype of arch users
>Though half of /g/ would immediately seethe at my choice of distro, and the other half defend it like some sort of trench war.
Is arch the perfect GNU/Linux or a cucked gentoo?
I'm positive there's some domain in which You could be regarded good also because for one reason or another You decided to pick Linux over Windows
True, though I'm not sure I get many points for it since I was exposed to Linux since my early childhood. So it was kinda a given
