Thinking about a corrupt justice system makes me want to re-read the books of Judges and Samuel in the Bible.
During a time when Israel had no king and was ruled by judges, the book of this name highlights six judges and their increasing corruption. These judges start off fairly well (Othniel, Ehud, Deborah) but become increasingly worse (Gideon, Jephthah, Samson). The book ends with two very disturbing stories that show how incredibly lawless the people had become.
Samuel was a good judge who did not take bribes or pervert justice, and he was also a prophet that woke the people up and started a spiritual revival. Later he made the nation's first king (the people's choice, who failed, went crazy, had people murdered, resorted to witchcraft, and died in a humiliating way), and then the nation's second king (who was the man God chose, became its greatest ruler ever, and later one of his descendants would turn out to be the Messiah.)
