The Islamic State The Islamic State (IS), also known as ISIS or ISIL, is a Salafi-Jihadist militant organization whose goal is the establishment and expansion of a caliphate in Iraq and Syria and the creation of a global Islamist movement.
Organizational Overview First Attack: October 28, 2002: Members of Jama'at al-Tawhid wa'l Jihad (which would later become AQI and then ISIS) assassinated U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) officer Laurence Foley outside his home in Jordan (1 killed, 0 wounded). Last Attack: April 21, 2019. Nine suicide bombers simultaneously detonated bombs across Colombo, Sri Lanka.
