Not sure if the VOC originated in the Netherlands or if they were an outside organization that took over. Possibly related to the Phoenicians since they were the largest sea faring group at the time. They were merchants that took over the world and created the stock exchange.
If a nation was useful they kept them around after raping and pillaging, if not they committed genocide on a population probably with smallpox or something similar. It was always about the resources they could steal, not the people.
