A boat full of undocumented migrants landed on a beach in San Diego

26 January 2024
A boat full of undocumented migrants landed on a beach in San Diego before running into the wealthy La Jolla neighborhood.
More than 20 migrants were filmed storming the beach on Wednesday morning and disappearing into the southern California enclave, where homes go for a median price of $2.2million.
The exclusive footage was shot by NewsNation's National Correspondent Jorge Ventura. It shows the migrants arriving on the shore on some sort of boat, before they take off running into the neighborhood in San Diego, the largest city on the Mexican border.
More than 42,000 asylum seekers were released in San Diego from October through December, 2023 - an average of 637 a day, as reported by The San Diego Union-Tribute. That number does not include migrants who cross illegally, like those seen landing on the La Jolla beach.
The county has already spent $3million caring for the asylum seekers, and has allocated another $3million.
Similar migrant releases have taken place in Tucson, Arizona, with agents coming across 2,000 people a day and dealing with packed shelters.
Migrants continued to enter the US illegally in near-record numbers last year, in a trend that will weigh on President Joe Biden as he defends his record against his likely 2024 election challenger, Donald Trump.
The US Border Patrol recorded 2,063,692 encounters with undocumented immigrants in the 2023 fiscal year, down just slightly from the record high reached in 2022.
