A perfect storm - exploring the impact of climate change on drowning risks (HLPF 2024 Side Event) Every year, drowning claims the lives of 235,000 people globally. Over 2.5 million in the last decade alone. Drowning affects every nation in the world, but its impacts are unequally spread. Climate change is influencing the nature of drowning globally. More than half of all deaths are amongst children and young people, with more than 90% of all deaths occurring in low- and middle-income countries. These are preventable deaths and this must change.
