Presidential Address on Immigration
President Obama in a national address outlined three executive action steps he was taking to change the U.S. immigration system. One, which he noted was controversial, involved addressing the millions of undocumented immigrants living in the nation. Under his order, if a person has been in the country for more than five years, has children who are citizens or legal residents, she or he must pass a criminal background check and be willing to pay taxes to apply to stay temporarily. The other two measures called for additional resources for law enforcement personnel to stem the flow of illegal crossings and speed up the return of those who do cross illegally and making it easier and faster for high-skilled immigrants to stay in the U.S.
