>>152918The Redheaded libertarian @TRHLofficial - James Monroe was our youngest founding father and also one of our most underrated. Let’s talk about him.
He was a wounded Revolutionary War Hero. At 18, James Monroe felt called to serve and dropped out of the College of William and Mary in 1776 to join the Continental Army. At the time, his passion for the revolutionary cause outweighed his desire for formal education. Shortly after joining the Continental Army, he was shot in the shoulder during the Battle of Trenton in 1776, after he crossed the icy Delaware, with General Washington on Christmas night. Monroe would carry that bullet for the rest of his life.
Monroe would later become a diplomat trained in law by Thomas Jefferson, who would also be his lifelong mentor. Monroe would help secure the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, doubling U.S. territory for $15 million and transforming our nation’s future.
Monroe later became the 5th President of the United Stares, and our last founding father President, serving from 1817 to 1825 during the “Era of Good Feelings,” a period of relative political unity. His presidency saw economic growth and territorial expansion, though it also faced challenges like the Panic of 1819. But most notably, Monroe would issue in 1823, The Monroe Doctrine, which was a bold policy that opposed European colonization in the Americas, and shaped U.S. foreign policy for centuries.
James Monroe’s was so respected, that the capital of Liberia, “Monrovia”, was named in his honor in 1824 due to his support for the American Colonization Society, which aimed to resettle freed African Americans in Africa.
Like John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe died on July 4, (but in 1831) adding to the coincidence of Founding Fathers passing on Independence Day. He was the third president to do so, symbolizing his deep connection to the nation’s birth.
