That’s why @TheJusticeDept ’s @CivilRights Division sued the state of Washington for enacting an anti-Catholic bill that required Catholic priests to break the seal of Confession. To Catholics, breaking the seal of Confession results in automatic excommunication and the risk of eternal damnation.
Today, a federal judge issued a preliminary injunction blocking enforcement of that law against Catholic priests in three Dioceses. As the judge correctly recognized, “there is no question” that the law burdens religious free exercise. And Washington did not show that its law survived strict scrutiny.
As @POTUS put it, his “Administration will not tolerate anti-Christian weaponization of government or unlawful conduct targeting Christians.” The Department of Justice is working every day to combat anti-Christian bias—not just within the federal government, but also by state and local governments.
