The Forgotten South @forgotten_south - It’s 2026, and America turns 250 this year
To mark such a significant milestone, I wanted to do something meaningful, so today, I’m excited to announce a new project for the year ahead:
250 Years, 250 Graves
Throughout 2026, I’ll be visiting and sharing the graves and stories of 250 individuals who contributed to the fight for American independence. These stories will take us into cemeteries, rural landscapes, and forgotten places, where the lives of ordinary people intersected with an extraordinary moment in history.
A major focus of this project will be highlighting the role of the South in the American Revolution. Oftentimes, the Southern campaign and the people who lived through it are overlooked, despite the many pivotal events that unfolded here. I hope this project helps shed light on those contributions and the human stories behind them.
I’m incredibly proud to begin this journey and grateful to share it with you. I hope you’ll follow along throughout the year as we learn more about the people whose lives helped shape the nation we know today.
Pictured here is from my visit today, on the first day of the New Year, to the grave of William Strayhorn, who fought in the American Revolution.
