>>172838Hans Mahncke @HansMahncke - What an astonishing coincidence: accused of fraud yesterday, and by this morning a mystery burglar has thoughtfully removed all the documents that would have proven it.

The Minneapolis daycare center targeted by this tweet, Nokomis Daycare Center, received telephone threats of violence & was broken into last night & vandalized, & checkbooks & parents’ documents were stolen.
https://x.com/HansMahncke/status/2006393802714439774Hans Mahncke @HansMahncke - One of the truly remarkable things about the United States is the sheer extent of grassroots civic engagement and participatory democracy. It flows naturally from the country’s founding, the structure of its democratic process, the ethos of self-reliance, the imperative to safeguard liberties, an inherent community spirit, and much more. There is no universe in which you would see large swaths of Europeans seize the mantle and collectively work to expose fraud in the way Americans are doing right now with the recent daycare and other scams.
A large part of this difference comes down to culture. Europe is far more centered on state reliance, on the idea that the government sorts everything out. But the real tragedy is that those Europeans who would like to emulate the American model of civic engagement and independent investigation are stifled by the state. You simply cannot publish the kinds of exposures seen in the U.S. in recent days, starting with @nickshirleyy’s video, without immediately risking being charged with defamation, privacy law violations, inciting hatred, spreading misinformation and disinformation, undermining public order, etc. For most people, even if they want to engage civically, the risk is simply too high, so they remain silent.
