Aside from the peculiar dynamics between Seattle’s modern protest/riot apparatuses and local police, what’s hard to ignore in Mayor Wilson’s announced initiative is the potential legal ramifications – namely, what appears to be an act of seditious conspiracy. Mayor Wilson isn’t pulling the old wink-and-a-nod schtick with public statements about legal observers or informing illegal aliens about their rights, she’s directing police to effectively hinder federal immigration enforcement efforts. Under 18 U.S. Code § 2384, one of the manners in which seditious conspiracy occurs is when “two or more persons in any State or Territory, or in any place subject to the jurisdiction of the United States, conspire to… by force to prevent, hinder, or delay the execution of any law of the United States.”
When you have Mayor Wilson ordering the SPD to hinder federal law enforcement while also having those officers essentially mobilize anti-ICE activists who routinely obstruct federal authorities, seditious conspiracy would appear to be in play. It should go without saying, but if you’re a police officer in Seattle, do not carry out these orders from Mayor Wilson, the outcome is not going to be favorable for any police officer dumb enough to follow through with obstructing federal law enforcement.
Acting on any of these directives ushered in by Mayor Wilson could see local police ensnared in a legal conundrum that carries a 20 year prison sentence, and the last thing you want to be in prison is a former police officer.
