Kelly's health steadily declined in the late 1980s and early 1990s. In July 1994, he suffered a stroke and stayed in the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Centre Hospital for seven weeks. In early 1995, he suffered another stroke which left him severely disabled. Kelly passed away at the age of 83 on February 2, 1996.
