Christine Niles @ChristineNiles1 - After Pope Leo XIV appears to have denied or ignored the SSPX request to consecrate new bishops, the SSPX announces it will act in defiance of the Supreme Pontiff and will consecrate new bishops on July 1st.
The SSPX hasn't consecrated bishops since 1988, an act that resulted in the automatic excommunications of Abp. Lefebvre and the four bishops he consecrated, in defiance of the Holy See.
Pope Benedict lifted the excommunications of the living bishops in 2009, in hopes of bringing about reconciliation.Pope Francis made generous concessions toward the SSPX during his pontificate, granting them indefinite faculties to hear confessions and to officiate marriages.
"Both the Bishop who, without a pontifical mandate, consecrates a person a Bishop, and the one who receives the consecration from him, incur a latae sententiae excommunication reserved to the Apostolic See." -canon 1387, Catholic Code of Canon Law
