It is much more complex.

A lot of the response to this article so far: “Well what do you expect, Notre Dame isn’t Catholic at all!” Meanwhile, the article literally opens with the story of students *carving a human-sized replica of the basilica out of ice* and thousands of them attending Mass outside it in 19* weather. Notre Dame’s Catholic identity is a complex thing. My piece:

The FBI received a kidnapping complaint on March 1, 2025. Agents traced the ransom calls to a home in southwest Albuquerque where they discovered 11 undocumented immigrants from Guatemala, including one unaccompanied minor, as well as more than 20 cell phones and a ledger documenting smuggling activity. The victims reported that Isaias David Jose and Tomas Mateo Gaspar locked them in rooms, confiscated their shoes and phones, and threatened them with violence.

Alterman made roughly 5.5 million from the scheme, much of which he received through shell companies. As part of his plea agreement, Alterman agreed to forfeit his Lake Worth, Florida estate and a 2022 Rolls Royce Ghost purchased with money traceable to the scheme.
