Norman Bethune, a surgeon, died in Yan’an—the CCP’s wartime capital (1937–1948)—from an infection after accidentally cutting his finger during surgery. He was later elevated to the status of a Communist saint. As school kids, we were required to memorize Mao Zedong’s eulogy praising his “selfless internationalism.”
Another was a nurse named Jean Ewen. There were also two Christian missionary doctors, Richard Frederick Brown and Robert McClure (no photos available).
These individuals proved that the road to hell is paved with good intentions.
