A day that calls Italy to remember a painful page of our history, which for decades was the victim of an unforgivable conspiracy of silence, oblivion and indifference.
We remember the martyrs of the foibe and the tragedy of the Julian-Dalmatian exodus. Hundreds of thousands of Italians who chose to abandon everything rather than renounce their identity.
The Nation must not be afraid to face that truth, rejecting into oblivion every squalid attempt at denial or reductionism. Remembrance is not rancour, but justice. It is the foundation of a shared memory that unites and strengthens the national community, charting the path for those who will come after us.
We have received a witness, and we have no intention of letting it fall. As demonstrated by the variety of initiatives and commemorations that the Government is promoting this year too, such as the “Treno del Ricordo” which will symbolically retrace, from North to South, the journey of those who decided to be Italian twice. By birth and by choice.
Italy will never again allow this history to be bent, denied or erased. Because this history does not belong to a portion of the border or to what remains of the Julian-Dalmatian people. It is a history that belongs to the whole of Italy. To each one of us.
