>>176154Satan was directly using scripture out of context to deceive Jesus into sin.
Anyone can read the Bible and repeat a verse. Satan proved it. We also people to read their bibles, and this is well and good. Yet Satan reads his Bible and knows it better than any human.
The difference is that he read it with sinful intent in order to deceive.
“For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.”
Romans 8:5, 9 ESV
Paul is trying to show us in Romans that we either live in the flesh or the Spirit. He calls it “phronema”, a Greek term from Aristotle that refers to “right thought leading to right action”, or the meeting place of saving faith and good works.
If our “right thoughts” are set upon the flesh, the our actions will please the he flesh. We can’t honor God if we solve worldly things above Him. Indeed, Paul tells us that it’s impossible to please God with the phronema of the flesh.
But Christians are different, for if the Holy Spirit lives inside of us, then we can have the phronema of the Spirit. And that is how one can read and properly understand.
It’s very easy for the world to distract us, and often the flesh overtakes us. We keep the phronema of the Spirit by pleasing God. Fasting, prayer, bible study, tithes, offerings, good deeds, mission work, charity, volunteerism; these are Christ’ commands, and He draws near to us as we draw near to Him.
“For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot.”
Romans 8:7 ESV
It is IMPOSSIBLE to please God if our phronema is wrong. Read that again and absorb it.
This is why we must keep in the Lord. Satan will constantly assault us with false accusations out of context verses. But he can only win against those with the phronema of the flesh!!
With the phronema of the Holy Spirit, we are defended and equipped to resist!
