Abby Johnson @AbbyJohnson - Story time!! When I worked for Planned Parenthood, a gal I worked with named Laura gave me this statue as a joke. We always made fun of Catholics…they were the ones outside of our clinic constantly praying. Priests would come out. Nuns. We would see them with their rosaries. They were an easy target for ridicule. Their piety bothered us.
So one day, Laura comes in with this statue and says she bought it for the new apartment Doug and I had just moved into as our “housewarming gift.” We laughed and thought we were so funny. This statue moved with us everywhere we went. It just became a part of our outdoor decorations.
Then I left Planned Parenthood. I suddenly saw this statue in a new way. It was all dinged and scratched up from our moves, but still standing strong outside of our home. Her face seemed different. Her arms outstretched. Everything was different now. Three years after I left the clinic, my family joined the Catholic Church. And every time I would walk into my home, I would see her face…reminding me of her son and His mercy for me.
We just moved into our camper. As we were packing up our belongings, I got a little teary-eyed as I picked her up once again to load her in my car. Now she is standing outside our little camper, reminding us that even in this new adventure in our lives, we are never alone. Her arms outstretched, reminding us to run to the Father. Her face so delicate, reminding me of my role in my family. Feminine. Gentle. Mother.
Blessed Virgin Mary, pray for us.
Jesus, hear our prayer.
